LILFORD, Lord [Thomas Littleton Powys] Coloured Figures Of The Birds Of The British Isles.  R.H. Porter, London 1885- 1897 First Edition. VII vols originally issued in 36 parts. Complete with 421 chromolithographic colour plates and hand coloured lithographic plates (on a very heavy paper) as called for, all mounted on to linen stubs. The plates are by A. Thorburn and J.G. Keulemans,  G.E. Lodge and W. Foster. Smartly bound in brown half morocco leather with decorated paper covered boards, marbled paper endpapers , with the spine in six compartments with gilt titling and decoration. The top edges of the text blocks are  gilt. As seems to be common to many copies of this work, the  pages and plates have pencil numeration throughout. There is shelfwear to the bottom edges of the boards, but the set presents well on the shelf. Internally there is  foxing, offsetting and toning as seems usual to this work, especially to the text leaves, but the plates are in the majority clean and bright. A Very Good + set. This monumental work was first published from 1885, but was incomplete at Lilford's death. It was completed by Osbert Salvin in 1897. Lilford was a founder of the British Ornithologists' Union.
