Manuscript story. “ Pretty Polly, A Tale” illustrated by H.A.B. The story is written in a tidy hand in ink into an 8vo faintly ruled notebook, covered in red leather, gilt ruled to the edges, respined recently to style. Pp 91 unpaginated with further blanks. No date, but mid to later Victorian.  A complete story. The tale of Pretty Polly takes place in “ a wild part of Yorkshire”. Polly live with her father, Colonel  Beverly. She has an older brother Jack who is in the army, currently serving in India, and two older sisters, Arabella and Jemima, cast in Cinderella ugly sister mould. Polly has her dogs Nero and Tatters as her faithful companions and bemoans her lack of an exciting social life, the local “ society” invitations claimed by her sisters.

Polly lives in Oakdale house, just twelve miles from Lady Hastings in her widow’s weeds  at “ ghostly looking” Goring Castle, ( “ the story had got about that it was haunted”) , with her eminently desirable and handsome son Sir Lancelot…”tall, broad shouldered …”, “ an agreeable young Adonis”…Tatters the dog becomes snared in a rabbit trap , and who should come to the rescue… but I would spoil the story by giving the ending away…suffice it to say that wet clothing is involved in the story along the way.

The three pencil illustrations are rather well handled, and the story has a certain charm .
